Our Publishing Company
Over 20 years, we saw good success and published a variety of popular and important titles, such as An Introduction to Heat and Cold as Therapy and The Emergence of the Massage Therapy Profession in North America: A History in Archetypes. However, there have been many changes in both massage therapy education and the publishing industry, with a rapid decline in the past few years in demand from schools for textbooks. As a result, as of July 8, 2019 Curties-Overzet Publications will no longer be actively in business. Going forward, we will still be happy to fill orders on remaining stock and ebooks (including enquiries about bulk discounts), but will not not be replenishing inventory or launching new titles. History
Curties-Overzet started from conversations between Debra Curties and Johan Overzet, who were friends and members of the Sutherland-Chan management team. As massage therapy educators they had a keen awareness of the dearth of textbooks and other educational materials available to our profession at that time. Their idea of becoming active in publishing was galvanized by difficulties Debra experienced in 1997 in interesting publishers in a book she was writing about breast massage. Discussions with colleagues led her to believe that she was not the only one finding it difficult to work with mainstream publishers on projects on the frontier of massage therapy education. “I guess I’m going to have to consider self-publishing,” progressed to thoughts of starting a massage therapy textbook publishing company. Curties-Overzet Publications came into existence in 1998.
Our mission has been to set a high standard for content and innovation, make a contribution to the expansion of the available catalogue of materials, and create products that are accessible to students, instructors and practicing therapists.
This led to a commitment to publish cutting edge massage therapy education materials, specializing in helping new authors with solid credentials and teaching backgrounds to publish their first textbooks. We also attracted more established authors to work with us.
In addition to being a primary publisher, Curties-Overzet also expanded its business to include distribution of selected textbooks, DVDs and other educational materials produced by others. Having a good perspective of needs and resources on both sides of the border has enabled us to bring excellent educational products available in one country to the attention of schools, practitioners and vendors in the other. For example, Curties-Overzet distributed the much respected Trail Guide to the Body series.
We very much appreciate the support Curties-Overzet Publications has received from the manual therapy field and thank you for doing business with us.
